11,000 primary school students in Pahang unable to read

KUANTAN: More than 11,000 primary school students in Pahang - including 765 in Year Six - are unable to read.Responding to a question in the state assembly Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said 3,764 students in year two, 2,973 in year three, 2,321 in year four, 1,398 in year five and 765 in year six have been identified with this problem."The state government, recognising the seriousness of this problem, has, in collaboration with the state education department, implemented several strategies to alleviate this problem," he said.

Adnan said phonetics courses have been implemented and 75 trainers have been employed by the state educaiton department."We also have set a monthly target as to the number of students who have to be rehabilitated on a monthly basis and it is compulsory that all state education department officers monitor the progress of the programme at all schools in the state," he said.

To another question as to the cost of the water transfer project to Selangor, Adnan said the project, which is slated to begin in early 2008, will cost RM3.751bil, which includes the cost of acquiring land belonging to the Orang Asli of Sungai Temir and relocating them.Lone Opposition member, Leong Ngah Ngah (Triang - DAP), also asked were the benefits to the state and Adnan said the state would get the water royalty that was to be paid by the Selangor state goverment.
